Week 5 and the Fireballs faced their third blue team in a row! It was a tough morning for the guys, with Bryson B. out of town, a very early 9am start (lots of tired little boys) and a gigantic muddy puddle in the middle of the field!
The first game this week was The Crocodile Show. Rocco B. was fantastic in both defence and offence as he scored all nine goals for the Fireballs. He was outstanding and an inspiration for his team mates.
We would like to know what he has for his breakfast please?
Travis S. was also very good this week. He missed a goal by about 3 inches and had several strong defensive stops and powerful kicks. He had to leave the field due to an injury but bravely came back to help his team win the match.
Isaac K. came very close to scoring. He had some good stops and is trying to get more involved. He is getting better with every game.
Jack D. was a trooper. He was getting a bit more involved this week and Coach Kevin W. was very happy with his patience. Jack D. always tries his best when the ball comes close so we need to get him running around a bit more! He never seems to get upset and is always happy to play. I think we need to get him a bit more angry!
The Blue Thunder had some good players but the Fireballs did well to keep them at bay and in the end came out on top. Final score was 9–4 for the Fireballs.
In the other game this week, Cole W., Bryson W. & Noah H. sounded like a formidable group on paper but sometimes in sports you have an off day and I think all three of managed to have one at the same time. On any other day I think they would have easily beaten their opponents.
All three of them had to play the entire game as we were a man short. We also had a giant puddle, slippy grass, the early start, too many referees and some unnecessary interruptions so it was always going to be a struggle.
The important thing was that although they were never in control of the game, they never stopped trying right up until the final whistle.
Their passing and sharing of possession was much improved and they always had one eye on getting a team mate involved. That was excellent to see.
Bryson W. tried hard and had some good runs and tackles but the Blue Thunder just managed to contain him this week. We think he had been watching some soccer on the television and he seemed to be trying out a new “crazy legs” tactic! I am sure he will be back next week better than ever.
Noah H. did however pull off the most audacious back heel this week, which almost resulted in a Fireballs goal. We have no idea where he learned that.
Noah H. did manage to sneak a wee goal to give the Fireballs a glimmer of hope nearer the end but it just wasn’t enough this week.
Cole W. was his usual annoying self and did very good to keep the Blue Thunder at bay. He scored a fantastic Hammer style goal and only lack of left foot practice prevented another.
In the end the score was 4–2 for the Blue Thunder but on another day, the Fireballs would have easily reversed the scoreline.
It was an interesting morning. Much different to the normal noon kickoff we have but good to see the kids at different times. There are definitely some who benefit from the later game!
We didn’t manage a double win this week but we were very close. Good stuff from everyone considering.
